After 90 years the eight Church bells of St Paul’s Church in Adlington, their immediate surroundings, the clocks, clock faces, and the tower itself, needs restoration to ensure that it can continue in full use. To complete the work to a high standard £100,000 is required.

If nothing is done, there is a very real risk that the bells will fall silent within 10 years, the clock faces will have to be boarded up and the tower itself closed off.

The Cenotaph on Railway Road in Adlington is now seen as the focal point of remembrance in the village. However, many people may not be aware that the Church Tower of St. Paul’s was erected as a war memorial to honour all those from the Parish of Adlington, that lost their lives in World War One.

I am a Councillor for Adlington Town Council and this year, as Town Mayor of Adlington, I have chosen to fundraise in support of the restoration of St Pauls War Memorial Tower.

The restoration of our War Memorial Tower, which was completed in 1932, will bring together the past and the future. Whilst we honour the lives of those who sacrificed theirs for ours, we will ensure that generations to come, will enjoy the beauty, functionality and sounds from the tallest war memorial in the Borough of Chorley.

I have been involved in a number of war memorial project over the last 30 years and this is particularly close to my heart. The Adlington side of my family, saw 13 members make the Ultimate Sacrifice during the two World Wars. Not only do I see it as my duty to ensure their War Memorial continues to honour them for years to come, I also owe it to the 194 other men and women from Adlington, Anderton, Duxbury and Heath Charnock that lost their lives.

Although my fundraising effort will only scratch the surface of the full amount required, I hope it will help to raise awareness of the restoration appeal and help contribute to the success of the project. The people who answered the call from this country and gave their lives, lives which are now commemorated by our War Memorial Tower; we must now answer the call to ensure their sacrifice continues to be honoured.
