Through Frost & Fire is an anthemic rock tribute to the Battle of Murino (January 8, 1880) — a clash in the Battles for Plav and Gusinje during the turbulent final decades of the 19th century. In the wake of the Congress of Berlin (1878), the Ottoman Empire was pressured to cede Plav and Gusinje to the Principality of Montenegro. But the Albanian highlanders, united under the League of Prizren, refused to surrender their homeland.
Following the earlier Montenegrin defeat at Nokshiq (December 1879), Murino became the next great stand. The battle was fierce and unrelenting — cannon fire echoed through the valleys, muskets cracked in the frost-filled air, and steel clashed against steel in close combat. By the day’s end, both sides claimed victory, but the Montenegrins withdrew, and Albanian fighters held their ground. Their defiance kept Plav and Gusinje in Albanian hands until the Great Powers took matters into their own hands. Still it’s a a powerful testament to the unbreakable will of the highland warriors.
Lyrics:
(Verse 1)
Snow on the peaks, fire in our veins,
Foreign hands try to stake their claim.
They lost at Nokshiq, but they come once more,
Marching hard through the mountain door.
Drums in the pass, steel in the night,
The League rides out, ready to fight!
Through bitter winds, we made our stand,
For freedom’s call, for our mountain land!
(Chorus)
Through frost and fire, Murino calls,
The red and black will never fall.
From Plav to Gusinje, our oath still stands,
The eagle’s will defends these lands!
No tyrant’s chains, no foreign hand,
Shall break the pride of this mountain land!
(Verse 2)
Cold winds howl, the cannons flare,
Snow drifts rise in the biting air.
Shadows move where the rifle cracks,
Brave hearts charge and won’t turn back.
Through the storm we see the flame,
Every man calls freedom’s name!
Steel meets steel in the mountain fight,
And Murino holds through the frozen night!
(Chorus)
Through frost and fire, Murino calls,
The red and black will never fall.
From Plav to Gusinje, our oath still stands,
The eagle’s will defends these lands!
No tyrant’s chains, no foreign hand,
Shall break the pride of this mountain land!
(Bridge)
Their pride was broken at Nokshiq’s roar,
Murino blocks the invader’s door.
Through frost and fire, the oath still stands—
The eagle’s spirit flies across these lands!
Through every storm, through every fight,
We guard the peaks through the darkest night.
No foreign flag shall ever wave,
Above the land our fathers gave!
(Final Chorus)
Through frost and fire, Murino calls,
The red and black will never fall.
From Plav to Gusinje, our oath still stands,
The eagle’s will defends these lands!
Through frost and fire, our hearts ignite,
Forever we soar in freedom’s light!
