Acting on information that Maoists were holding out at the Chapa Adivasi Colony in Vellamunda, the Kerala Thunderbolts, the elite commando force of the Kerala Police had earlier arrived to take stock of the situation on the ground, only to met with three rounds of gunfire. The Thunderbolts responded with ten rounds of their own, following which the Maoists retreated into the deep jungles of Wayanad. Dinendra Kashyap, the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Kannur, maintains that combing operations are still on for the eight-member gang.
