Your LCD screen doesn’t tell you anything useful about your image. Too many people misunderstand or misread their light meter. So your last line of defense is the histogram! Don’t take another photo without understanding it and unlocking the secret to perfect exposures.

Yes, there used to be a lot of guesswork in exposure in the days of film and we prized film that had lots of “latitude” a term which really meant was very forgiving. Now professional photographers make images with computers and use something that is usually anathema to artists to determine their exposures — math.

The mathematical interpretation of the values in a RAW file is displayed in the form of a handy graph called the Histogram. Reading the Histogram is the only way to accurately judge the exposure of your image.

To mathematical types a histogram is a simple graphical display of data using bars of different heights. To a photographer it is an odd party colored mountainous terrain that is supposed to convey meaning about an exposure on the back of our cameras, but is mostly turned off so we can see the glorious image on the back of our 3” LCDs. By turning the histogram on, though and learning to use it to judge exposure, you learn to see things the way your camera does. Sound tricky? It’s actually quite simple and in this short video, I will show you how.
