The joint defence facility was established by the CIA in 1966 and is controlled (at least in theory) by both Australia and the US. Pine Gap has been described as America’s most valuable intelligence site outside US soil, allowing them to control spy satellites over a whole third of the world, including Gaza. But protesters have raised questions over what exactly the US is doing with the data and intelligence collected there, and if, ultimately, this information is being passed on to Israel.
