We piled into our trusty Toyota Matrix and set off from Stewart, BC. Crossing into Hyder, Alaska, we turned onto Granduc Road, 37 km of gravel, potholes, and hair-raising curves. The Matrix grumbled a bit but handled it like a champ—every bump reminded us we were in the wild mountains.

We stopped at the viewpoint, a pull-off above the valley. Coffee brewed, sandwiches devoured, and jaws dropped as we stared at the glacier glittering in the distance. The view alone could’ve been our whole trip… but we were hungry for more.

A few more kilometers on Granduc Road brought us to the trailhead. From here, a short walk takes you right to the glacier. The path meanders through alpine meadows and rocky slopes, with icy meltwater streams along the way. We couldn’t resist splashing in the freezing water. Mosquitoes joined the party, so a repellent was a lifesaver.

In less than an hour, we reached the ice itself. Crunching along the edge, the sheer scale of it hit us — this wasn’t just a view from afar, it was a full-on glacier experience. We paused, took photos, and soaked in the wildness.

The unplanned overnight stay nearby made sense — the sunset over the glacier was unforgettable.

Back on the road very early in the morning to make our way to Fish Creek Viewing Platform to see some grizzly salmon hunt. We started the slow drive down Granduc Road, knowing we’d just had an adventure we’d never forget.
