6 Things That May Cause Tooth Decay Without Sugar

Tooth decay can occur even without consuming sugars, due to medical conditions and other factors related to daily diet.

Why do teeth get cavities even without eating sugar?
1. Starch consumption:

Tooth decay is more common among people who consume a lot of starchy foods, such as bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice.

Many people don’t realize that starches are converted into simple sugars when chewed, which stimulates oral bacteria to produce more acids that erode tooth enamel.

In a study published on PubMed, researchers found that refined carbohydrates pose a significant threat to dental health due to their tendency to stick to the mouth and serve as a prolonged food source for bacteria.

2. Citrus consumption:

The risk of tooth decay increases with the consumption of acidic foods like tomatoes, citrus fruits, vinegar, and soft drinks, as the acids they contain weaken tooth enamel.

3. Dry mouth:

Saliva plays a major role in maintaining oral pH balance, removing food particles, and supplying essential minerals such as calcium and phosphate to the enamel.

On the other hand, a dry mouth reduces saliva flow, weakening the enamel and increasing the risk of decay.

Dry mouth can result from stress, aging, or the use of certain medications such as antihistamines and antidepressants.

4. Poor oral hygiene:

Neglecting oral hygiene is a major factor that increases the risk of tooth decay, as improper brushing leads to plaque buildup — a sticky film of bacteria on the teeth.

5. Certain medical conditions:

Tooth decay may result from various physical or psychological health issues, including:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

Frequent vomiting

Eating disorders

Chronic diseases that weaken the immune system

6. Fluoride deficiency:

Tooth decay may also be caused by a lack of fluoride, which could happen due to:

Not using fluoride-enriched toothpaste

Living in areas where the water supply lacks fluoride

It’s worth noting that fluoride helps remineralize tooth enamel and reduce the risk of cavities, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

How can you protect your teeth from decay?

Brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste.

Brush for at least two minutes each time.

Floss once daily to remove plaque and food particles that are hard to reach with a toothbrush.

Rinse your mouth with water or a medical mouthwash after consuming acidic foods or drinks.

Drink plenty of water to maintain saliva flow.

Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production.

Get regular dental checkups to monitor your oral health and catch any issues early.
