Hi there!

Growing up I loved making dumplings together with my family and eating them. It wasn’t until my friend Aaku (@aakulaxmi on IG) introduced me to a Nepali momo that I realized how expansive the world of dumplings are. As an ethnographer, I'm excited to be researching and learning more about dumplings from around the world. I’ll be tasting and learning about different styles of dumplings - how and where they are made and you’re coming with me on the adventure!

In this video, we will be learning about the world of momo which are dumplings traditionally eaten in Nepali, Tibet, and Bhutan. Aaku will be taking me around some of her favorite spots in Jackson Heights, New York. One of the most culturally diverse and significant spots in the city.


Mom's Momo (📍72-30 Broadway, Jackson Heights, NY)
It tastes just like the name suggests - a very simple and home-y Nepali style momo that taste like it was made by a mom. Get the white sauce and sepen they pack a spicy flavor punch!

Om Wok (📍89-17 Northern Blvd, Queens, NY)
Om wok is a Tibetan restaurant that serves some seriously incredible beef soup momo - it’s got a ton of juice or jhol on the inside that bursts out. It’s super flavorful and one of my favorites along this adventure. They also have a C-momo which we got with a cheese potato filling - it’s a little sweet and spicy.

Momo Crave (📍38-07 69th St, Queens, NY)
We almost ordered the entire menu here! They specialize in traditional Nepali momos and momos with a modern twist.
Taco Momo - Tastes like a hardshell taco really interesting take on your traditional momo
Sukuti Momo - I loved trying sukuti which is basically like beef jerky that’s been sauteed in a sauce and mixed with the momo
Jhol Momo - Momos cooked with a delicious chicken broth that makes my mouth water everytime I think about it.
Tandoori Momo - Momo on a stick! A twist on tandoori cooking method but for a momo.
Kothey Momo - We got the veggie one and it was delicious! It’s so light but packs a flavor punch. It’s steamed then pan fried on the bottom.

Zhego NYC (📍38-4 61st St, Queens, NY)
This place was such a treat because I rarely have Bhutanese food. I also learned that Bhutan is also a culture that makes and eat momo. We tried a cheese momo at Zhego for the first time! It was super cheesy and flavorful the dumpling skin had a very mochi like texture.

One of the special things I’ve learned about dumplings is that they are found in almost every culture and almost every story revolves around making dumplings together with loved ones and sharing them together.
