Dunnottar Castle

This visit to Dunnottar Castle was recorded on 27th August 2023.

Dunnottar Castle is a romantic and haunting ruin located on a curious rocky outcrop along the Aberdeenshire Coast 1.6 miles south of Stonehaven. The surviving buildings are largely from the 15th and 16th centuries, but the site is believed to have been fortified since the Early Middle Ages. Mary Queen of Scots visited Dunnottar on 26 August 1562; we missed her by one day . . . and 461 years! :-)

Make no mistake, as you can see from the opening shots, visiting the site involves a long, steep climb down and then a long, steep climb up - going in both directions!
