Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall is facing backlash for cutting winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners while taxpayers cover her £350-a-month energy bills for a second home.

Kendall, who lives in a £4 million London mansion with her partner, an investment banker, claimed £3,810 in energy costs for her constituency rental property between April and July 2023, according to Commons records.

Her decision to limit the winter fuel payment, worth £100-£300 annually, to only the poorest pensioners is expected to push 100,000 people into poverty by 2027, based on forecasts from her department. Critics have labelled the move hypocritical, given her own publicly funded energy expenses.

Cristo hosts a head-to-head debate with former Labour special adviser Paul Richards and Conservative Borough councillor, Harrison Allman-Varty.
