Gateway Classic Cars of Las Vegas is thrilled to present this 1961 fully documented Chevrolet 409 Biscayne Fleetmaster! This is not your ordinary Biscayne but is a Biscayne Fleetmaster Style # 1-1411 (68# lighter). 201,000 Biscayne's were produced in 1961 but only 3,000 Fleetmasters with only 138 of the 3,000 that were two doors and none ever produced with a 409 engine, other than this one. Production # 41. The Biscayne Fleetmaster was just a one-year production never to be produced again. Studies were done on this car by two 50 year historians who are 2 of the most versed on these types of cars one of whom is Doug Marion of Los Angeles Ca, writer for Super Chevy magazine for many years and Vern Franz of Jersey's Late Great Chevy's. In their findings as far as they can tell, out of a month-long study this is the rarest 409 ever produced as one has stated the rarest fully documented 409 in the world. This car had to have a letter from a speed shop to give to the GM regional zone office in Portland Oregon before they would let the first owner order the car. Once received the first owner won many NW drag races. The 409 finally broke and a 348 was installed and the fist owner then won E/S at the 1962 Winter Nationals in Pomona, Ca. Since then there were only 3 other owners who raced it extensively over another 25 years including taking first place at the AHRA World Finals in Spokane, Wa., with the 409 engine. Running Formula 1 DDHRA. The ol' 409 raced from ET to E/S to S/S to SS/S and M/P. Fasted run 30 years ago was 11.97. The last owner has had this completely garaged rust free car for 43 years.
Restoration came in 2012 with a complete body-off rotisserie done by Mickey and Glenn Larson of Twins Custom Coaches at the SO-CAL Speed Shop in Pomona, Ca., and painted by Mick Jenkins of Mick's Paint, at the same location and who is a 2-time winner of America's Most Beautiful Roadster. After restore it took 2nd at the ISCA Grand National Roadster Show Pomona, Ca, first place ISCA Roadster Show in Portland. Or., 1st place ISCA Boise Roadster Show in Boise, Id., and also a featured car at the Central Wa Custom Car and Cycle Show in Yakima, Wa.
The Fleetmaster is mostly all right number plus documented right dates throughout the car... The engine is a true 1961 3795623 built by legendary engine builder Lamar Walden out of Doraville, Georgia. Right number and dates include all parts from Flywheel, through the transmission, rear end gears and posi unit with pictures to prove so.
Also note the patches on the inner fenders are original patches made in 1962, 57 years ago at the Winter Nationals, the original owner took the outer headlights out to run air tubes up to the dual-snorkel air cleaner (This was thought of before the 64 ThunderBolt ) NHRA would not let then run it that way so they took the tubes out and patched the holes right at the drag strip. These are the original patches made that day. Also, note the pinstriping on the dash was done in 1961 by the infamous Meryl Beebe. The dash has never been restored or even touched up. Also, take note of the tow hooks that were installed to tow the car to the races from the '60s to the early '80s.
The car was restored back to its early racing days with pie crust slicks and Jerry Jardine headers. Jerry made the headers for it back then and again now.
It was a front cover car and centerfold in Super Chevy Magazine and also a center picture in Hot Rod Magazine.
Last but not least, this fully restored and fully documented 409 Fleetmaster was displayed in the World of Speed Museum in Wilsonville, Oregon for 2 ½ years.
