The concept of wearing wigs or alt hair for the first time around friends, family or the public is TERRIFYING. Like scary enough to keep you from even considering wearing a wig right???

YUP 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️

That was me 3 years ago. I knew something within me WANTED to change, I wanted to wear a wig & have FUN with it. But what would my peers think?! What would they say…. Would they talk about me behind my back??? Laugh at my biggest insecurity??

So I started with my one safe person, my husband. I confided in him for the very first time all my insecurities and struggles surrounding my hair & that I wanted to wear wigs. I knew of allll people, he’d be supportive of whatever I wanted to do to feel beautiful. As I suspected, he told me to go for it.

Once I built up enough courage that I could entertain the idea of shopping for a wig…. I text one of my closest friend’s pictures of the wigs I considered along with a confession; I hated my hair. Much to my surprise she completely supported me. Whew (relief)

Then once I got my dream hair I decided to just come ‘clean’ to social media about my new hair. I took a selfie showcasing my new hair & typed up a witty little caption about how excited I was to finally have hair I loved. gulp I terrifyingly hit post. (And terrifyingly is the understand of the CENTURY) I came back to my phone a few hours later to floods and floods of sweet supportive comments from friends, strangers, coworkers. All in support of my new hair. WHAT 😱 they supported me?!

I did it. I came out about my biggest insecurity & it wasn’t even remotely as horrible as I thought it would be.

Having support helped me better process & navigate my hair loss. It empowered me to be authentic to myself & those around me. It showed me there’s something so magical and powerful about letting your guard down to be raw & authentic. Maybe you aren’t to the point of letting the world know, that’s okay. Maybe you aren’t even sure who your safe person you’d tell is… that’s okay too. Take those baby steps & find some WAY to let go of pieces of your secret.
