The Economic Survey 2026 has warned that even though India’s economy remains strong, the rupee is not completely safe yet. India imports more goods than it exports and depends heavily on foreign investment to bridge this gap. As a result, whenever global uncertainty rises—such as due to Trump’s tariff moves, geopolitical tensions, or a global market crash—foreign investors tend to pull out their money, putting pressure on the rupee.

The Survey notes that a weaker rupee can sometimes soften the impact of tariffs and help keep inflation under control through cheaper oil prices, but in the long run, this situation is risky. For 2026, the Survey identifies trade tensions, rivalry among major global powers, and sudden financial shocks as major threats. To tackle these risks, it stresses the need for India to earn more dollars, boost exports and services, build strong foreign exchange reserves, and maintain policy credibility.
