Been playing the PS2 Armored Core games, especially since the announcement of AC6 has created a huge surge in AC content. I've known this franchise since childhood, and it feels really cool to finally see it become part of the mainstream. I mainly played 3, 4, and 4A, and loved all of them, but I never beat 3. I got AC1 on my PS3 digitally, and that game was excellent, though I never finished the final level because of the stupid platforming and I didn't have enough motivation to get all of the human plus bonuses just to beat the game easier.
Anyways, Last Raven is widely regarded as the most difficult in the franchise, and honestly, I can see that. It is brutal. In fact, the first time I beat the game, I didn't resort to cheats to unlock the "OP-Intensify abilities," but I did use a little bit of tool assisting from PCSX2... Just slowing time in half though, nothing super crazy, but still. Then the second time I beat the game, I used the cheat and wow it felt a lot more fair and manageable, but at the same time I felt kinda guilty using mechanics that were removed on purpose for balance.
So, before I start my third play-through, I decided I was going to go through it all without slow-down and without OP-Intensify, AND get an S rank on all missions, AND find all of the hidden parts. That's how much I love this game, it's so addicting and fun. But before I would do that, I would need to learn how to get competent with how the game actually plays, and what better way than to fight the #1 VR Arena opponent.
I'm not gonna lie, it pisses me off when I watch the replay from the AI's perspective. It's such obvious BS. That's what influenced me to try using OP-Intensify myself, to "level the playing field," but it's so overpowered it makes it feel like the victories I had with it weren't worth anything.
The first time I defeated him without cheats but with slowdown, I used a somewhat mobile build with 4 handguns. Zipping around him, dodging his blasts, and consistently dealing damage is what allowed me to win, besides the obvious tool assistance.
This time though, with NO cheats and NO tools, I finally defeated him.
I learned those EMC jamming thingies that shut down their weapon lock-on capabilities were SUPER useful, especially against this loser that likes to spam everything he has in his arsenal. My AC has some decent mobility, combining a very powerful booster with a nice generator and an efficient radiator, and it was all possible thanks to tuning the legs increasing it's maximum weight limit. I also used physical shield extensions, since Lucifer's attacks can be really devastating, so defense and stability should not be overlooked.
As for offense, I used 2 rifles with high fire rates. Rifles are some of the best weapons in the game imo, with pretty great accuracy and good balance of firepower, ammo, and mobility. Then I had 2 handguns in the hangars just in case I missed too much and ran out of ammo. Probably wasn't necessary.
Anyways, I'm really glad I finally did it. It's probably not anything special compared to what other players are capable of pulling off in this game. I don't know the best strategies or builds or whatever, I learned everything I did by myself through trial and error, but I'm proud of what I accomplished. I feel like I can beat the rest of the game now.
Although, I kinda feel like playing Nexus and Nine Breaker, since I've heard importing data from those games to LR could make the whole experience a lot smoother... Then again I've heard Nexus has horrible balancing issues and Nine Breaker doesn't even have a plot, so I'm not very compelled to play them, but I guess I'll still check them out.
Part of me also wants to play 2, 2AA, 3, and 3SL, but I really really really prefer the dual analog control scheme of the late 3rd gen games, I do not want to go back.
... Suddenly remembering how in AC1, I actually used the face buttons as the camera controls like an N64 controller, and it worked surprisingly well. maybe I should do that. Huh
If you read ALL of that, I am impressed and grateful. I ramble a lot. It's fun to let my thoughts loose. Typing on this brand new keyboard also feels nice.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this video. Stay tuned, I might make more Armored Core content :)
