🧊 Ice jams are most common in spring, especially during breakup, but they can also happen in Alaska during winter warm spells or freeze-up—especially on rivers with variable flow or partial ice coverage.

An ice jam happens when chunks of ice block river flow, causing water to rise—sometimes several feet in minutes. These sudden floods can damage roads, homes, and infrastructure in nearby communities.

🚧 Don’t drive around barricades
