How to Handle Negative Feedback From Your Manager or Colleagues at Work. Negative feedback from your boss, have you ever received negative feedback from your manager? Negative feedback or criticism from your colleagues or your boss can be quite challenging to handle. Learning to handle it is a must for your professional and personal development, especially when it's constructive, like in your performance review and evaluation. Research shows that people who are better at handling negative feedback are more successful than those who can’t handle it. Everyone will eventually be given negative feedback in some form or another. Regardless of the nature of the feedback, the way you receive it will make a huge difference. These are my 5 tips to make sure you react to criticism in a professional way:
1. Don’t Get Defensive. During a feedback conversation you might be feeling defensive, which is normal but don’t show it. This will come across immature and unprofessional. It is in your best interest to control it as much as you can.Try to suspend judgment for the moment. Learning how your boss / superior views you is an opportunity for a career growth.
2. Get more information to make things clear. It can come as a surprise to learn that people don’t see us the way we see ourselves. Avoid the temptation to talk to your boss immediately after receiving the negative feedback. Once you’ve had the opportunity to clear your head, think about the main points your boss mentioned. Do they make sense? Maybe you should go back and revisit this unexpected feedback with your boss?
3. Don’t Dwell on Negative Feedback. If it points to flaw which makes you self-conscious, you are probably going to feel bad about it and that’s completely normal. Allow yourself some time to work through these feelings and let them go. Remember that you are not your job! And your professional performance doesn’t change your value as a human being. Don’t get engaged in self-destructive thoughts
4. Show initiative and come up with an improvement plan. The best thing you can do to move forward is to come up with a plan on how to fix the problem. Take initiative and show you care about improving. Schedule a follow-up meeting to address the plan and to analyze how you has your progress been so far. Treat negative feedback as an opportunity to bond with your manager. A positive feedback might wait for you in your next performance review.
5. Learn from the feedback. Ask yourself: What have I learned about myself? What can I do differently from now on? The learning process can be about the feedback, about how you dealt with the feedback or both. Every negative feedback which has been constructive made me learn something new. It would be so much worse if your boss noticed you were doing bad work and wouldn’t say a word. If you are successful in accepting the feedback and recognizing what it’s worth, you will be much more productive in life.
