A bit more about the origin of “the fundamental particles” as a kind of quasiparticle:

In a previous video on this channel we talked all about how different the nature of electrons are in a solid, where due to quantum mechanics and the existence of this network of atoms, they become extremely wavey, delocalized things. Well when solving for the ELECTRON contribution to the thermodynamics of solids it turns out the energy-momentum relation they exhibit is DIFFERENT from that of a free electron. Much like with phonons and photons, at low energies quasielectrons behave much like regular electrons only really deviating at high energies, except there’s one key difference... their mass is different. Electrons in a solid behave as if they have a different, so-called EFFECTIVE MASS, than free electrons in a vacuum. And that’s because these basic objects AREN’T actually just free electrons, they’re electrons PLUS this interaction with all these atomic nuclei and with other electrons. And it’s only when we bundle or rebrand our basic object as a QUASIelectron that kinda conceptually absorbs in all those interaction effects into one new object with different behavior, that we get the right natural object. Sometimes we call a quasiparticle a DRESSED electron, in that it’s a fundamental electron PLUS all its interaction that kind dress it up to behave differently. So in a very similar way to how an electron in a solid can be rebundled or rebranded as a “free electron” with a different mass, the particles of the Standard Model are bundled objects whose apparent mass is really a bundled interaction with the Higgs field.
