Lorenzo Thomas (August 31, 1944 – July 4, 2005) was an American poet and critic. He was born in the Republic of Panama and grew up in New York City, where his family immigrated in 1948. In 1973, Thomas moved to Houston, Texas. Thomas had a two decade career as a professor at the University of Houston–Downtown.

Sprucing Spring Up On Larkin Street

I want to get up and do
something but I guess someone
already has

She’s pushing that
that that lawnmower
but I can’t see the lawn
from this angle

Elm trees shape sunlight lozenges
on the brown siding
as other music waits:

The shift whistle at Burlington

Children whispering giggles

The tractor man walks
back and forth
around
his complicated sputter shop
until she turns
over

But by that time that
that that lawnmower lady,

she’s finished with the invisible lawn
and out of the Arkansas sky
pale and blue as a dirty mirror

a green song comes up sprucing up
the spring
