IV Insertion Nursing Tip: Avoid Visible Vein Valves During IV Cannulation

Описание к видео IV Insertion Nursing Tip: Avoid Visible Vein Valves During IV Cannulation

IV Insert Technique Tip: Avoid Vein Valves if You See Them (Vein Check)

When starting an IV on a patient's forearm, you want to be mindful of any visible valves.

Granted, most patients will not have a low enough body fat percentage to see valves, but if they do, you can usually spot them by a knotty or bumpy appearance along the veins, as you can in this patient's forearm veins.

Vein valves prevent blood from backing up. If you ever want to test a vein to see if a valve is present, you can occlude part of it, run your finger along it, and blood will not refill into the vein behind the valve.

You want to avoid valves as much as possible because it can be difficult to slide off the cannula if you hit a valve, causing you to start over or risk blowing the vein.
