With Wi-Fi 6 becoming the new norm 2.5 and 5 gigabit ethernet I feel will become the new networking norms in homes and businesses. 5 gigabit ethernet is exactly that where 5 gigabit ethernet is 5 times faster than gigabit. Now this does not mean that 5 gigabit ethernet will always run that fast but let me explain. The autobahn is engineered to allow a very fast car to travel at triple digit speeds. If you have a Prius on the autobahn it cannot drive at the maximum speed of the engineered road. The Prius is like your hard drive or storage subsystem. If your storage can only run at 400 MB/sec then that is your bottleneck and NOT the 5 gigabit ethernet which is like the autobahn. 5 gigabit ethernet can allow you to go as fast as your hardware on both ends of the connection can allow up to 5 gigabit ethernet speeds.

Here's some bottlenecks that you need to look at when trying to achieve up to 5 gigabit ethernet speeds:
1. One or more of the paths (Switch/AP/Cabling) over your network is less than 5 gigabit ethernet speeds between the source and destination nodes that you are testing with.
2. Data storage and drive cache limitations (If you think it's NOT your NVMe then create a RAM drive and test writing to RAM over the network)
3. If using a USB 5 gigabit ethernet adapter for lan connectivity there is USB overhead that will prevent you from hitting full 5gig / 5gbe speeds however you should be able to hit and exceed 2.5gbe / 2.5gbase-t speeds

I've came across where when using one manufacturers CAT7 cable that a 10GbE connection negotiate down to 5 gigabit ethernet and when I switched out with a cheap Amazon branded CAT7 cable it worked at the full 10 gig speed so if you get a negotiation below 5 gigabit ethernet speeds try replacing the cable with one from another manufacturer.
