Jewish Online Guides: Lifting up the Sefer Torah is called Hagbaha and it reminds us of one of the most beautiful of Rabbinic sayings: we think we are lifting the Torah but actually the Torah is lifting us. Rolling up the Sefer Torah is called Gelila and treating the Torah almost as if it were a person. We put a crown upon it as if to say this is the word of our Sovereign, our King, the word of God Himself.
