Examples of Double Covalent Bonds

Описание к видео Examples of Double Covalent Bonds

In this video we’ll look at several examples of double bonds in covalent compounds (also called molecular compounds). Double bonds occur with two pairs of valence electrons are shared between atoms. We can represent that with dots to show the electrons or with two lines (each line represents a pair of electrons).

Common examples of double bonds are:

Ethene Lewis Structure:    • How to Draw the Lewis Dot Structure f...

The formation of a double bond allows for a molecule to attain octets for each atom in the molecule.

---- Steps to Write Lewis Structure for Compounds (including double bonds) ----
1. Find the total valence electrons for the molecule.
2. Put the least electronegative atom in the center. Note: Hydrogen (H) always goes outside.
3. Put two electrons between atoms to form a chemical bond.
4. Complete octets on outside atoms.
5. If central atom does not have an octet, move electrons from outer atoms to form double or triple bonds.
