Cuban state airline says US sanctions force it to end routes

(24 Oct 2019) Cuba's state-run airline will no longer offer international service, according to government media, because foreign contractors will no longer provide services or leases for aircraft to the country.
US sanctions have made it increasingly difficult for Cuba to do business with foreign entities, and Cubana de Aviacion, the state-run airline, is the latest casualty in the ongoing tensions between the US President Donald Trump's  administration and the island.
Cubana de Aviacion offered service to Mexico and Guyana, amongst other routes, two important destinations for many Cuban travelers, many of whom travel for either US visa services, which are now located in Guyana, or to buy supplies to run private businesses.
The halt of international routes will also affect domestic service, since some of those routes encompassed other major Cuban cities like Santiago, before the international leg of the flights continued onward.
According to the Cuban government, as many as 40,000 local passengers could be affected by the halt in international service on those domestic routes.
