Recently, US President Donald Trump welcomed the new Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, even hosting him at the White House. Al-Sharaa is a former Islamic terrorist who commanded an Al-Qaeda-linked militant group. This terror leader is now the president of Syria after the former President Bashar Assad was overthrown. Assad was a secular leader, a former eye doctor who was educated in the West and protected Syria’s Christian population. Assad was toppled by a coalition that included Al Qaeda and the Israeli government.

As soon as the Assad government fell, Israel moved to occupy key strategic territory in Syria. The USA has perhaps several hundred troops in the eastern oil-rich region of Syria, strategically close to several potential hot spots, including the Kurdish zone, Iran, and the Turkish-occupied region of northern Syria.

So, Al-Sharaa is tolerated as Syria’s president (and even welcomed into the White House) as the US implements a classic Rimland-strategic move blocking the Heartland powers of Russia and Iran from preserving a foothold in the eastern7th Mediterranean. It also fits the wider US strategy of “flexible forward denial” as part of its low-cost, high-influence containment strategy — the heart of modern American geopolitics.
