Are you suffering Reliability-Itis?
Many of us were taught that it’s a good thing to be the the one that everyone calls on to get things done, to be the…. reliable one. But unfortunately, when we get praise for this a lot early on, over time, it can lead to… reliability-itis!
However, it’s holding you back!
Being the reliable one is keeping you in the busy work and prevents you from working on the bigger projects and visible work that will move your career and leadership forward and have you seen by the people in your organisation that impact some of the key decisions around your future. And not only that, once you recognise what’s going on here, it will start to really annoy you!
It’s ok through – most of us have fallen into this ‘condition’ before at some stage – and it may have worked for you earlier in your career BUT with where you are now.
It’s time to say – enough is enough!
Let’s talk about the cure, there is three parts to this prescription.
#1 Audit your work activities – ask yourself these 3 questions…
Which tasks are keeping you safe, small and busy? And not really adding strategic value to your organisation or your career and leadership plan.
Which tasks are you given as a scapegoat for others? They throw it to you because they don’t want to do it and give you a “but you are really good at it”, to make you feel good, as they run back to work on their larger more visible projects.
Ask yourself which tasks you are good at, but they don’t make you shine or demonstrate where you really add your unique and powerful value to the organisation. Yes, you might be good at taking minutes for your colleagues in the leadership meetings but let’s pass it over to “James this week to support him to further leverage his effective communication skills amongst the leadership team”.
#2 Say NO
I know, I know… saying no can be uncomfortable AND … allow it to become your superpower!
No is a strategic word and allows you to take charge of your career, empowers you to focus on creating the leadership you know you are more than capable of – if you only had the time!
This might play out like this:
To a colleague it might be: Thanks for thinking of me, I don’t have room in my schedule for that this month, check back in with me next time, I like to work more closely with your department.
To your boss: That doesn’t fall in line with our discussions about my career plans, Todd was wanting to expand his experience in that area.
To the management team: With my current work priorities I won’t be able to fit that in till next Friday, you can check back in with me then if you like. I’m working with - Insert bosses name here – on several priorities at the moment, so I’m aware of not watering down results for our team.
#3 Step up when you are not feeling ‘comfortable’
Stepping into being the person you strive to be right now, being the leadership that really makes a difference in other peoples lives, having a career that lights you up.
You know – there are a lot of people that talk about wanting this, just like you do – but when it comes to it they don’t necessarily have the commitment, determination or passion to do what it really takes.
If it was easy everyone would be doing it.
Step up… this is your time, and its not going to always be comfortable and easy, there are times when you will doubt yourself, time when it’s tough, and times when you are called a ‘ball breaker’ or something similar by others, but I’ll tell you this… the more you let go of being reliable for reliables’ sake, the more you have the opportunity to shine!
So there you go – start your prescription today, and you’ll be cured in no time.
