(Sometimes called Mukkoti Ekadashi in Telugu) is the Shukla paksha Ekadashi that occurs during the Dhanurmasa period in the Hindu calendar (corresponding to late December - January in English calendar).
Vaishnavism (Worship of Vishnu) culture believes that 'Vaikuntha Dwaram' or 'the gate to Lord's Inner Sanctum' is opened on this day. The Margashirsha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi in lunar calendar is known as a 'Mokshada Ekadashi'. Special prayers, yagnas, discourses and speeches are arranged at Vishnu temples across the world on this auspicious day.
Divya Desams refer to the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the works of the Tamil Azhwars (saints). Divya in the Tamil language indicates "premium" and Desam indicates "place" (temple). Of the 108 temples, 105 are located in India, one in Nepal and two outside of the Earthly realms. Most of the Divya Desams in Tamil Nadu follow the Thenkalai tradition. This includes the important temples of Srirangam and Triplicane. The Divya Desams are revered by the 12 Azhwars in the Divya Prabandha, a collection of 4,000 Tamil verses.
Vaikuntha Gadyam Sanskrit: (वैकुंठ गद्यं) is a Sanskrit prayer written by the Srivaishnavism philosopher Ramanuja towards the end of the 11th century. It is one of the first bhakti prayers in this school of thought and is the basis for many prayers of this style. It is recited in the 108 Divyadesam temples including Srirangam.
Vaikuntha Gadyam, unlike the commentaries of Ramanuja on Vedanta, does not have detailed philosophical debates. Instead, it is a pure expression of bhakti and gives a detailed description of Vaikuntha seen through the eyes of a liberated one (Mukti Jivan). Ramanuja stresses the important message that surrender to Lord Narayana's Lotus feet (Narayana Sayujyam) results in SAlOkyam (attaining the abode of Lord Narayana), SarUpyam (purity of soul) and Sameepyam (remaining close to the Lord). He glorifies the eternal Kaimkaryam (devoted work) performed by devotees like Ananta Sesha, Garuda, Vishvaksena, a devotee considered first among equals and the Dwara Palakas (door keepers) to Vaikuntha, Jaya & vijaya. He then gives a brief glimpse of the "bountiful treasure" awaiting a devotee who does similar devotional work.
