How to set work shift, work offsets and tool offsets on a Fanuc 10T lathe

A big shoutout to Wes Johnson and his video about the very same topic:

Much of what is in this video is based on that vid of John's.

To sum up, work shift Z is the distance from from a homed turret face to the chuck face. (Move the turret to the chuck and enter machine Z coordinate into work shift Z (if not enough travel use a piece of known length between the chuck and the turret, and sum that to machine Z)). Work shift X is the distance from a homed turret boring bar holder to the spindle center line. Use an indicator on the chuck and indicate a boring bar holder (take in account the flex in the indicator holder). When done, enter machine X into work shift X.

Set work offset by chucking a piece and measure from the chuck face to the end of the workpiece (with a caliper for example). Enter the measured length into G54(G55.....G59) Z. Work offset X is always 0.

The easiest way to set a tool is to have a piece in the chuck and have its length measured and set in g54. You activate a tool (T0101 for example) and g54. Now you jog to the end of the piece. You go to tool geometry offsets in tool 1 Z and press Z0 and measure. For the X you take a light pass on the od of the part, measure it (for example 21.45mm) and enter X21.45 and measure.

When you set all your tools at once in this way they are all in relation to each other. When you have set your tools and want to change your work, you just measure from the chuck to the piece and enter in g54. No other changes needed.

If you change a tool, you should again have a work piece set up correctly in g54. Then you just repeat the tool measuring as above.

A more accurate way of setting tools is to set a precision groung piece against the chuck. Enter the length of the piece in g54 and use that as reference.

A more accurate way of measuring a work piece is to have a tool set up with a precision piece as above. Then you activate g54 and a precisely set tool. You jog to the end of the piece. The workpiece length can now be read from Absolute Z. Enter this value into g54 Z.
