Help your students recognize characteristics and structures of argumentative, or persuasive, text by identifying the author's claim/opinion, distinguishing facts from opinion, and identifying the intended audience or reader with the above resources. Define argumentative/persuasive text and its components with the mini argumentative text anchor chart and practice this skill in authentic text or the included text with the three interactive notebook pages. And help your students learn the difference between fact and opinion and give them practice distinguishing between fact and opinion with the sorting activity included in the notebook.

Then dig deeper with the week-long argumentative text unit. After analyzing the structure and characteristics, you and your students will evaluate the author's claim based on the evidence presented in the text and compare different arguments made about the same topic. An assessment is included to measure student understanding at the end of the unit.
