Quivi sospiri, pianti, ed alti guai
rissonavan per l’aer senza stelle,
perch’io al cominciar ne lagrimai:
diverse lingue, orribili favelle,
parole di dolore, accenti d’ira,
voci alte e fioche, e suon di man con elle.

[There sighs, wailing, and loud laments
resounded through the starless air,
so that I immediately wept:
various languages, horrendous speeches,
words of suffering, cries of anger,
voices loud and faint,
and with them the sound of the beating of hands.]
