Fiberglass Pool Repair

Maintaining a fiberglass pool can mean more than simply cleaning it on a regular basis, any damage that it sustains will also need to be repaired. By following the necessary steps, you will find it possible to repair any cracks that may appear.
Step 1 – Inspection
The first step necessary for the fiberglass pool is to drain it so that you can have full access to the crack and the surrounding area. Follow this by letting it dry. Examine the defect to get an idea of the severity of the problem, which will help you to decide which method to use to undertake the repair. Cracks that are merely cosmetic will require different treatment to that which affects the structure of the pool.
Step 2 – Gather Equipment
Once you know the extent of the problem with the fiberglass pool repair, you will be in a position to obtain the correct repair kit. For minor cracks, it may be sufficient to cover it with fiberglass paint. Alternatively, you can purchase a fiberglass repair kit from hardware and decorative stores. Gather all the other tools that you will need, including an orbital sander with a replacement cutting wheel.
Step 3 – Sand and Cut
Start by sanding the fiberglass pool around the area of the crack using the orbital sander, which will enable you to smooth the surface and remove any particles that have come loose. Replace the disc of the orbital sander with a diamond-edged cutting wheel. Use a straightedge and a pen to mark a distance of approximately half an inch around the entire crack. You will then be able to cut the crack out to a dept which is sufficient to remove the entire defective section.
Step 4 – Refill
The fiberglass repair kit may contain the cement needed to fill the gap as well as the bonding compound that is applied above it. However, hydraulic cement can be obtained separately, if necessary. Mix it in accordance with the instructions and use a putty knife to fill the gap before applying the bonding compound and leaving it to dry. Once dry, follow this by applying some polyester putty, making sure that it is smooth with a putty knife or a scraper. After it has been allowed to dry, smooth it properly with the use of the sanding disc of the orbital sander. Use a cloth to wipe away the resultant dust.
Step 5 – Finish Up
The gel included in the fiberglass repair kit can then be applied to the repair site of the fiberglass pool. Smoothly apply the gel using a paint roller so that it covers about and inch and a half outside the edge of the repair site. While it remains wet, carefully apply the fiberglass cloth to the surface to avoid any air bubbles or folds. This should overlap onto the existing surface to a distance of about 2 inches. Follow this with another coat of gel before letting it dry and sanding it until it is smooth. After wiping away the dust, conclude with a coat of sealant which should dry thoroughly before the pool s refilled.
