Notes:
This is a very dark HDR grade. The HBO Max version shown here is in 4K SDR. The HDR10 and Dolby Vision version was compared directly to the 4K UHD HDR10 for this comparison. The 4K Blu-ray has been converted to SDR for this video. The Dolby Vision version on HBO Max (not shown here) is dimmer than the HDR10 version however most tv's have a brighter Dolby Vision setting for daylight/average lit viewing and in this case Dolby Vision Bright Mode on my display looked about the same as HDR10 on both 4K Blu-ray and HBO Max. Still, I would believe given the director's involvement in this movie that the default Dolby Vision setting is likely producing the closest creator intent (provided your display can meet the requirements). Color between the HDR10 and Dolby Vision versions are very close and any differences are probably due to the change in tonemapping. Note that the HBO Max and UHD Blu-ray are virtually identical in color and contrast WHILE IN HDR, however the 4K Blu-ray has higher bitrate and appears more detailed at times. When HDR is turned off, the HBO Max stream defaults to what appears to be the same SDR master used for the 1080p Blu-ray and that version is what is shown in this video. Based on Warner Bros track record with Digital Copies, I would expect the SDR option released today on iTunes, Prime Video, etc to look clearer and have a higher bitrate than this HBO Max stream, but the HDR10 or Dolby Vision should look identical. The HDR to SDR images from the 4K UHD shown here are very close in color to the actual HDR10 Blu-ray, with of course the HIGHLIGHTS being slightly dimmer than while the disc is in HDR10, as well as HBO's HDR10/Dolby Vision. Still, bright areas of the picture like Wonder Woman's lasso or lightning coming from The Flash are satisfying in both HDR and SDR on all versions. Ultimately, you should be able to use this comparison to make a pretty good judgement call on which version is best for you.
