Can QR codes be used to authenticate products?

Theoretically, it is possible. However, you need to ensure that each QR code is printed only once. In other words, you need to apply a unique serialization, and perform the detection only once.

In practice, it does not work because nothing prevents the counterfeiters from copying the QR codes. Then, even if a unique serialization is applied, there is no way to ensure that the QR code detected is the real instead of the copied one. There is then a high risk of giving a wrong answer to the person performing the detection.

One way of solving this issue is to combine it with an invisible security feature. For example, one could apply Cryptoglyph on top of QR code or create a Secured QR Code.
