The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and Biomeme Inc. urgently need support to counter a new threat to some of the world’s rarest big cats-tigers and leopards. The threat is Canine Distemper Virus (CDV), a serious viral disease of domestic dogs and wild carnivores, that was first diagnosed in a wild Siberian tiger in 2003. Since that time CDV has spread causing many tiger deaths.

With mortality rates as high as 40-50% during outbreaks in captive tigers, there is concern that the impact on wild populations may be severe. Diagnosis of CDV in these animals is hampered by a lack of local wildlife diagnostic laboratories. WCS is partnering with Biomeme Inc. to provide rapid field testing to diagnose CDV in remote tiger and leopard habitats which is critical for monitoring and caring for these animals, as well as understanding how this virus is spreading. Please help WCS in their fight to save tigers and leopards.
