India ranked 159th in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index published annually by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
It is an international NGO defending and promoting media freedom.
It ranks countries based on five categories -- political, legislative, economic, sociocultural, and safety of journalists.

Findings
Norway topped the ranking, followed by Denmark and Sweden.
The last 3 places are occupied by- Afghanistan (178th); Syria (179th), and Eritrea (180th).

Why Does Freedom of the Press Matters?
The press serves as the fourth pillar of democracy by holding the government accountable.
Freedom of the press leads to an informed, educated, and progressive society.
During the Freedom struggle, the Press played a crucial role by raising awareness and voicing public opinion against British rule.
