Taika Waititi, Thor Love and Thunder director (among other things) went from being a slightly obscure indy New Zealand filmmaker, to one of the biggest names in Hollywood.

After directing The Mandalorian, Thor Ragnarok, and Jojo Rabbit, Taika is now attached to a Star Wars feature film. SInce I made this video, he has also starred in the critically acclaimed Our Flag Means Death with Rhys Darby, and directed Thor Love and Thunder.

This video essay looks at how Taika Waititi's films balance comedy with drama, and how he has maintained his own unique style throughout his filmmaking career.

I not only look at his recent films, but also some of his earlier successes in Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the Shadows, Boy, and even Eagle vs Shark.
