On April 5, 2025, BCYF brought together over 400 young people to Baltimore Center Stage's production of Akeelah and the Bee for a L.A.B experience, as a part of the learning lab. The event featured a powerful performance of Akeelah and the Bee, a play that celebrates resilience and community.

L.A.B. (Learn & Build) Events are immersive, experiential learning opportunities designed to engage 500 youth and families in exploring the learning lab’s 2025 theme: collaboration.These events provide hands-on experiences that encourage young people to think critically, collaborate, and connect with their communities, fostering a deeper understanding of their role in creating positive change.

Adapted by Cheryl L. West from the acclaimed film, Akeelah and the Bee tells the inspiring story of 11-year-old Akeelah Anderson, who overcomes challenges to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This production, directed by Taylor Reynolds, captivated the audience with its heartfelt storytelling and dynamic performances.​

Following the play, attendees engaged in a post-show discussion with the cast, exploring themes of perseverance, community support, and the importance of educational opportunities. This immersive experience is part of BCYF's 2025 learning lab, focusing on collaboration and community engagement.
