How To Promote Yourself As A Filmmaker Without Sounding Like A D!#%

I talk to a lot of filmmakers each week and they all say the same thing about promoting themselves, “I don’t like tooting my own horn”… or “I don’t want to sound salesy”. Well, promoting one’s self doesn’t have to be that way. In this video, I want to walk you through some solid techniques, hacks, strategies that might help you get your ideas, opinions and work out there in a way you feel comfortable with and that helps build an engaged audience.

I hear so many people tell me they’re afraid of those five people in their Facebook feed who will say something negative… or they’re afraid of getting trolled. Sure, that might happen, but the other option is to NOT promote yourself and wait for some random, faceless stranger to “discover” you, much like winning the lottery.

I know I sound like a broken record but building and owning an audience is the single thing we can do that gives us leverage in this industry. Distributors are in the ad/subscription/ticket sales industry, not the celebrate art game. They have access to a TON of great content, so finding content creators with an audience makes sense to them. Good or bad, that’s their business model. So why not bring them the thing they want most… an engaged group of people who already love your work.

In the end we want to attract people to us and give them context about our work and why it’s important. We’re storytellers, not network marketers. We have the gift of authenticity and the ability to unpack complex ideas in ways people can understand and respond to. We want to pull people towards us, instead of pushing ourselves at them.
