3,000 police personnel to be deployed for Chithirai festival

400 CCTVs to be installed in and around Meenakshi Temple

Madurai city police will install 400 closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) and deploy 3,000 police personnel in and around Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and the route of Lord Kallazhagar procession for the Chithirai festival.

Reviewing the security plan proposed for Lok Sabha election, by-poll for seven Assembly constituencies in south zone and the Chithirai festival to be held in Madurai on April 17, 18 and 19, Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Vijay Kumar instructed officials to ensure frequent patrolling and additional picketing at all problematic, vulnerable and sensitive areas to ensure peaceful polling.

Commissioner of Police S. Davidson Devasirvatham, Inspector Generals of Police K.P. Shanmuga Rajeswaran (South Zone) and S. Manoharan (Economic Offences Wing), and senior police officials from south zone took part in the meeting.

Mr. Vijay Kumar directed the police officials to execute pending non-bailable warrants and take appropriate action against identified trouble mongers as a precautionary step.

Special check posts would be erected at all important areas to monitor movement of vehicles and entry of illegal materials.

Chithirai festival

In connection with Chithirai festival, when lakhs of devotees would congregate in the city, he asked the police officials to create adequate parking lots for vehicles coming to the city.

He advised that traffic diversions should be made to ensure that devotees did not face any hardship while witnessing the rituals of the festivals and the general public carry out their routine works without any hindrance.

Special crime teams should be deployed at the festival venues to trace missing children amid the crowd.

Mr. Vijay Kumar instructed the officials to erect wooden barricades at 33 polling locations closer to the venues of Chithirai festival celeberation so that voters were ensured of uninterrupted passage to the polling booths.

Besides Deputy Inspector Generals of Police and Superintendents of Police from south zone, officials from special units were also present at the meeting.
