Male Lions Announcing Their Presence in the Kruger National Park South Africa.

In this video we saw 3 of the 5 Trichardt males who have pushed further north of their regular territory in an attempt to take over the Shishangaan lion pride. The male with the Mohawk mane was very vocal, roaring making the neighbouring coalitions aware of their presence.

The Trichardts have been putting pressure on the Maputo and Kumana male who are the pride males of the Shishangaan pride. The Maputo male has some signs of injuries believed to be from a confrontation with the Trichardt males. We had seen the Maputo mating a few days after this sighting supporting a bit of a limp and a few wounds but seems to be recovering well now. The presence of the trichardt males has got the attention of the Southern pride males, three of the males have been patrolling and roaring near N’wanetsi picnic spot. The southern pride lionesses and cubs have been spotted along the H6 regularly further west of the picnic spot avoiding the potential conflict.

Two of the trichardt males haven’t been seen recently but speaking to one of the rangers he said he has seen two males with lionesses and cubs further south, so we are hopeful it is the other two trichardt males.

The trichardt male at the back in this sighting picked up a terrible injury from a fight with other lions a few month back his left hind leg is completely immobile. He is in an average condition considering the bad injury and hops along on 3 legs trying to keep up with his brothers but being in between another 2 coalitions it doesn’t look good for him if there is a confrontation with a another coalition. It’s always sad to see these beautiful beasts like and is an unfortunate part of nature. Appearing to be a broken leg his chances of recovering seem very unlikely. When he picked up this injury a couple months back we didn’t think we would see him again. While we are glad we did it’s just sad under these circumstances.
