How To Handle High Backhands In Tennis. The high backhand in tennis is one of the hardest shots to deal with and many tennis players struggle with it. In this video, Top Tennis Training coach Simon Konov will show you five ways to handle high backhands in tennis. These five options will work for both the one handed backhand two handed backhand. Often players will allow the ball to rise up to shoulder or head height and try to execute the shot from there, many times players are simply not strong enough to do so.
Here are the five options:
1. Move back and allow the ball to drop down to your ideal contact point. This is the easiest option in terms of executing the shot as you give yourself time by moving back and hitting the ball when it drops. The downside to this option is that you give up a lot of court space, so after you hit the shot you'll need to recover up into the court very quickly to avoid giving your opponent lots of court to hit in to.
2. Step in and take the ball on the rise. Using this method is more aggressive and you'll be taking time away from your opponent if you execute the shot well. This option requires fast feet to get into the correct position quickly but also a change in your backswing. As you are taking time away from yourself you'll need to shorten your backswing to help you time the ball out in front.
3. Slice the high ball. In this option you will simply execute an aggressive high to low slice backhand, instead of driving the ball. This method will allow you to really cut down on the high backhand and get the ball travelling back very low to your opponent. This will force your opponent to hit upwards on the next shot and possibly give you an easier ball that you can then attack.
4. Run around to hit an inside in or inside out forehand. To pull off this option you need to recognize very early that the ball is coming high to your backhand and be quick in moving around the oncoming ball. This is the second most aggressive option as you can really attack the high ball with your forehand if you work on this.
5. Hit the ball before it bounces as a drive volley. This requires great timing and quick feet to get the ball before it drops too low to be attacked with the drive volley. This option is the most aggressive as you'll have to move upwards into the court and most likely you'll follow your drive volley into net to finish off the point with a volley.
