Life Imprisonment in Absentia: Journalists Convicted After May 9 Protests in Pakistan

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court has sentenced eight journalists and social media commentators to life imprisonment in absentia, linking their online activity to violent protests that erupted after former prime minister Imran Khan’s arrest in May 2023. The court ruled that content shared by the accused amounted to terrorism under Pakistani law, arguing it encouraged fear and public disorder during a sensitive period.

The cases stem from nationwide unrest on May 9, when demonstrators targeted military installations following Khan’s brief detention. In response, authorities launched an extensive crackdown on Khan’s party and critics, using anti-terror laws and special courts to pursue hundreds of cases related to protest activity and alleged incitement.

Most of those convicted are believed to be living outside Pakistan and did not attend court proceedings. Those sentenced include well-known journalists, analysts, and former military officers turned digital commentators. Alongside life terms, the court also imposed additional prison sentences and financial penalties, with further jail time if fines are unpaid.

Press freedom groups have previously criticised the investigations, calling them punitive actions against critical journalism. All verdicts remain subject to confirmation by the Islamabad High Court.
