USS San Diego is a fascinating ship. When you think of 'veteran American warships', the Atlanta-class probably doesn't come to mind. Instead, you probably think of Enterprise or New Jersey. While Atlantas are the 'shot to pieces' or 'Sullivan Brothers' ships.

San Diego, however, is the most decorated American cruiser...probably. Some sources will claim she only actually earned 15 battle stars, while others will go for 18.

Whichever figure you go for, this ship was just about everywhere after Guadalcanal. If there was a major battle, she was there. If there was a raid on some random Japanese island...she was probably there. The story of USS San Diego is the story of the Pacific War, after Guadalcanal.

It'd probably have been the story of the Pacific War after Midway, if she'd been completed a tad bit sooner. She was *everywhere*.

Despite this, the ship never suffered notable damage and never lost any crew. Even during Typhoon Cobra. That's something to respect, even if you subscribe to 'she only got 15 battle stars'.
