It's plant care day and the first day of winter here in Australia! That means it's time to swap out the mister for slow-release fertilizer and get those grow lights ready. Even though it's sunny today, we've already had some chilly mornings with frost. In this video, I'm showing you all the different things I do to keep my houseplants happy and thriving during the cooler months compared to summer.

When my plants are dormant, I like to clean their leaves, add a slow release fertiliser, move them towards the sunlight, and catch up on a few other plant chores.

Winter is not the time to propagate or repot, it is the time to slow down and enjoy, look to Marvin the senior snoring schnauzer for inspo!

One of the biggest changes to my routine is switching from monthly liquid plant food to a seasonal slow-release fertilizer. Autumn was super warm this year, so I'm only just getting started with it now that winter's here. I'll show you exactly how to apply it, and you won't need to worry about feeding your plants again until spring!

Soil & Microbe Booster made with biochar and frass. This can be stirred through new potting mix when repotting, or sprinkled around the root ball to bring life to old mixes. Also great to add to composts to speed up decomposition.

Here are a few reasons to add this double act to your Plant Care kit:
Frass holds about 240 million microbial colony forming units per gram. It holds up to 200 times more nutrients than worm castings or compost with more diversity of microbes too.
They bring life to your potting mix by improving the structure of the soil and providing nutrients to your plants as they break down organic matter.
Biochar keeps plants kicking through dry spells and overwatering. It boosts the capacity of soil to hold nutrients and water, complementing the richness of frass.
Frass boasts a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) ratio of 4:2:2 and it’s still full of those underrated trace nutrients to help your plants flourish: iron, copper, zinc and so much more.

Bio Pellets are for Plant Health. The same nutrient rich Frass found in the Soil & Microbe Booster and combined it with three types of kelp, each one know for its beneficial effects on plants. The result is a small pellet that will break down over time and slowly fertilise your plants.

Alongside the Frass is kelp, there are a number of hormones and acids in seaweed:
Cytokinins: hormones that activate growth processes in plants meaning they stimulate cell division and therefore plant growth.
Auxins: have a number of different functions but one of the main roles is balancing growth speed, stimulating root growth as well as ensuring buds form and open at optimal times.
Algin: This is a seaweed extract that you might have seen in shops sold as agar agar. It can be mixed with water then added to soil to act as a wetting agent. The Algin in seaweed fertilisers therefore helps with moisture retention.
Betaines: increase water uptake and reducing plant stress.
Laminaria: assisting with plant recovery.
Sargassum: high in Alginic Acid, boosting water retention.
