A District Administrator or DC is the chief bureaucrat and land revenue officer of a district in Bangladesh. He is a member of Grade 5 of the administration cadre of the Bangladesh Civil Service known as the Bangladesh Administrative Service and is an important bureaucrat in the government. He is also Deputy Commissioner District Collector and District Magistrate. As a result he worked as a returning officer in land administration disaster management coordination of law and order situation and general and local elections. The Deputy Commissioner is a representative of the Cabinet Division. He is accountable to the central government for his work. He is the authorized liaison officer with the President and Prime Minister as well as Members of Parliament in the district. The Deputy Commissioner works under the direction and supervision of the Cabinet Secretary and the Divisional Commissioner under the Cabinet Division. Deputy Commissioners are appointed from among the Deputy Secretaries to the Government who have been promoted from the administration cadre of the Bangladesh Civil Service. According to the Warrant of Precedence the rank of Deputy Secretary is 25 but the rank of Deputy Commissioner is 24. However the term Deputy Commissioner is not a Bengali translation of the term Deputy Commissioner but refers to two different identities. In the current bureaucratic system of Bangladesh the application of the term District Administrator can be observed. Especially since the use of Bengali language is mandatory in government offices not only in the work of Deputy Commissioner but in the overall work of District Collector or District Magistrate the use of District Commissioner as a single Bengali synonym is common in practice. The District Commissioner as the chief protocol officer of the district performs the duty of giving protocol to important persons visiting the district. The District Magistrate is the Chairman of the District Law and Order Committee. On November 1 2007 when the Judiciary was separated the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 was amended and all judicial powers of the District Commissioner were largely vested in the Chief Judicial Magistrate
