Moving mental health treatment into the community out of the centralised St. Ann's institution. That's the goal of Health Minister, Terence Deyalsingh as he welcomed experts from Howard University to work with specialists here, to move this objective forward.

On Wednesday morning, he noted that there are several people who should not be institutionalised for years, such as children with autism or cerebral palsy.

Minister Deyalsingh said to achieve this, there must be a balance between how the sector is organised and the delivery of care.

According to the Minister, achieving the decentralisation of mental health care has been 60 years in the works. But next week will see a major push toward achieving it. Once the Cabinet approves the plan, he said for the next few years this revolutionary approach will take the country to a place where mental health dwells within the community.
