When we're upset, it's can feel very difficult to communicate well. It's more likely that things either spiral out of control and we don't know what we are talking about anymore, or that one or both of us shuts down.

A good rule of thumb for communication success is: Am I feeling more connected to myself and my partner, or am I feeling clearer about myself, my partner, or the situation? If one or more of these things is happening, it's likely there is value to what's being talked about. If not, it's likely you're not getting anywhere and maybe doing damage.

So if you're in the midst of a difficult conversation, try to take a mindful moment and ask yourself if you're getting more connected or clearer and if not try to make a guess as to what would move toward that goal and share or ask it.
