Iona College was honored to welcome Black History Month keynote speaker Kevin Powell on Tuesday, February 23, as he presented “When We Free the World: Making the Case for Love, Real Diversity & Inclusion, and A New Kind of Leadership.” Inspired by his newest book of the same title.

Powell is an American writer, civil and human rights activist, poet, journalist, public speaker, filmmaker and entrepreneur. He has written more than a dozen books, including The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood, a critically acclaimed and brutally honest memoir about his life, including his youth.

As a pop culture curator, Powell produced the first exhibit on the history of hip-hop in America at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, which toured America and overseas. As a humanitarian, Powell’s work includes local, national and international initiatives to end violence against women and girls, including a very well-regarded appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show highlighting domestic violence.
