Such a recognizable bassline in this song! It’s my humble opinion that the bassline is the backbone of this song. You might think that the maingroove is always the same (for instance bar 47). But Gerald Johnson plays a lot of small variations in this maingroove. Listen for instance at the difference in bars 4; 10; 35; 43 and 47.

I also like the very high licks on the C chord very much (bar 33 and 74). Also the hammor on notes; slides and rhythmic variations in the Chorus are very much worth looking at (for instance bars 17; 21; 52; 54.

In general the ‘secret’ of this basspart is in really playing the 16th notes tight and on the spot. Also playing the staccato (short) notes in the maingroove of the verse is really defining this bassline. Listen for instance at the eight notes on the first and third beat of bar 1 and the eight notes of the first beat of bar 2. It’s really important to play these notes short and not long (legato).

There are some ‘odd’ notes in ths basspart. Listen for instance at bar 25. On the F chord Gerald plays a D (with slide) which is fine because the D is the sixt note of the F chord. But on the Bb flat chord he plays a D flat (Db) which is the minor third on a major chord. In bar 36 he plays a E on the Bb chord which is also not fitting within the chord. But you could also see this as a ‘leading note’ towards the next chord because the E played on the Bb chord is the major third of the C chord. In bar 70 he plays a C on the Bb chord. I think because it is played short it fits in rather well. He does the same in bar 72.

I think that this is the most accurate bass transcription you can find on the internet (and YouTube). I wish you a lot of fun with it! And please support me by buying this transcription on my website www.basscoverpete.com

I play this song on a Fender Precision 1976 with flatwound strings. Standard E-A-D-G tuning. No effects used. Don’t forget to tune your bass a bit higher A4 = 444 Hz.

Bass: Gerald Johnson
