According to Whannell the first film was a haunted house story. With Insidious: Chapter 2 you have a family that already knows what is happening so we needed to create a new driving force. He loved the part of the film that revisits the first film.

With Insidious: Chapter 2 there is a chance to explore the universe further with more families.

For Shaye, it was a relief to not have to wear a mask for this film. She hopes to continue on in the Insidious film series.
