Humpback whales travel great distances within ocean basins to feed in rich waters and breed in remote locations where they can be safe from predators like killer whales. Male humpback whales sing long, complex songs at their breeding grounds. These songs are thought to play an important role in their social system, but the exact function of the songs is not well-understood. Humpbacks also appear to practice or perhaps develop their songs as they travel to the breeding areas. In this recording, a humpback whale moves slowly past a recording location in Southern California, singing continuously for 14 hours. Listen to a full performance of the whale’s song, lasting 45 minutes. The song consists of several sections, or themes, that are organized in a repeated sequence with innovations and additions throughout the performance.
